How Italian VAT is calculated

Adding VAT to a net amount

VAT = net × rate ÷ 100. Total = net + VAT. Example at 22%: on €1,000 net, VAT is €220 and the total is €1,220.

Extracting VAT from a total

Net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). VAT = total − net. Example at 22%: from a €1,220 total, the net is €1,000 and VAT is €220.

Italian VAT rates

The standard rate is 22%. Reduced rates are 10% (e.g. many food products and tourism services), 5% and 4% (e.g. essential goods). The right rate depends on the good or service: when in doubt, ask your accountant.

VAT payable: a different story

This tool computes VAT on a single amount. The VAT you actually owe is the difference between output VAT (sales) and input VAT (purchases) for the period - the running count Ditta keeps updated on its own, invoice by invoice.
